How did I quit smoking

November 18, 2009

Yesterday was a quite notable day on my calendar. It wasn’t just another (thirty-ninth, to be precise) anniversary of the Lunokhod 1 landing on the Moon. Yesterday was exactly one month since I quit smoking.

How did I do it?

I didn’t read Allen Carr. I didn’t put a loads of nicotine patches all over me. I didn’t even need to summon all my willpower to quit smoking. I did nothing like that.

Well, actually, I didn’t do anything at all.

On Friday evening I decided to quit smoking and went to sleep.

On Saturday morning I bought a cartload of cakes, cookies and chocolates. I managed to avoid a cigarette stand at the checkout successfully since my Friday’s urge to quit was still very strong.

The rest of the Saturday and the whole Sunday I spent in my apartment eating sweets every time I craved for a smoke and sleeping most of the time.

That’s all. That weekend was the most difficult part of all quitting process. On Monday it was much easier. I still craved from time to time but eating a candy or chewing a gum helped to soothe it.

Now, after a full month of smoke free life I’m still experiencing something that I can describe like acute envy for the smokers. And it’s quite understandable. I was smoking for a dozen of years or so. It means I was spending at least half an hour every single day doing one thing and now I feel a bit lonely without it. Hopefully, it will disappear in a month or two more.

Poor Man’s Cable Management

If you want to hide all the power cords that grow plentifully from the rear of your computer, table-top beer brewery and other vital gadgets… just bind the power surge protector to the table leg with a piece of duct tape.

It’s cheating…

April 22, 2009

Now, I have no problem with adderall and other such drugs if the person taking them actually has a problem (ADD, ADHD, etc), but it REALLY infuriates me when students take drugs like this just to get ahead. It’s cheating and it’s not fair to those who don’t have access to the drugs, or don’t want to take the drugs. We have to work twice as hard just to stay at the same level.

Another one case of the brilliant liberal logic: If I can’t (or don’t want to) improve myself I should pull down anyone who are not so retarded as me to my own loosy level so I can feel myself ok and normal and keep my self-confidence safe from those who are better than me.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of taking amphetamines off prescription. But I’ll try to give provigil (modafinil) a try when I’ll find a way to buy it (it haven’t passed all the regulations here yet so not available in the drugstores). Or, if I fail, I’ll go for the phenotropil – modern and very effective nootropic that helped me a lot several years ago, though, it’s not cheap at all.

Cabela’s tees are nice

Yep, they are funny and so anti-vegan. But the “I believe” series is my favorite.

Addiction Performance Shirt

Addiction Performance shirt

I’m definitely not a sporty person. I have retina problems to advocate my laziness. But this Addiction t-shirt from their Outdoor Performance series is really good. It’s very comfy and really – as intended – helps you sweat less.

It’s absolutely invisible under the sweater or jacket but makes even thin ones much warmer. And another great thing – it costs less than $12 including shipping from the US to the Europe.

Cabela’s is my favorite place to shop clothes now. Some of their offers are really eye catching. Same day as the Addiction shirts I’ve grabbed there nice goose down parka for as low as $60! Well, actually a bit less than $90 including the shipping cost but it’s still a bargain. The same quality things are two to three times more expensive here.
