I think I should start with the statement that the LG GW300 is not anything like that nice Google Nexus One or Motorola Droid smartphones that everyone are buzzing about. GW300 is a pretty simple (comparatively) QWERTY mobile handset without any fancy 3G, online applications repository and GPS capabilities. Mobile phone on a budget, that’s it.

Speaking of connectivity, it has EDGE and it’s tolerable when you are browsing mobile optimized pages. I like the idea that I can use this phone as a modem in some situations but I really don’t want to.
Built-in browser has a very nice interface and works pretty good for small pages, but when you point it somewhere where the pages are a very little bit more complicated it returns “insufficient memory” error.
Fortunately, the Java apps are running pretty fast and Opera Mini works just well.
Buit-in e-mail client is ok, and works good with gmail account. The only drawback is it’s morbid obsession to encode anything in base64.
Twitter and other similar web apps are running good in either Opera Mini or built-in browser. 2.4″ LCD is ok to read some RSS feeds in Google Reader on the go. The fonts are smooth, good looking and easy to read.
What about the main feature on LG GW300 – its QWERTY keyboard – it is great, comfortable and very helpful. No matter what do you want to use it for: txting, managing a phonebook, writing down a shopping list or random thoughts – everything is much more emm… natural with it.
The battery of LG GW300 could be better, but everything comes with a price – bigger battery would make LG GW300 significantly heavier. Anyway, you can buy a bunch of USB-MicroUSB cables and put one in the every computer u use during a day, at home, at the office, etc. so you can charge the battery anytime and anywhere.
What I like more in LG GW300:
- Wonderful QWERTY keyboard.
- Pretty nice display and overall quite ok interface.
- 3.5mm headphones jack.
- A lot of useful fields in phonebook records.
- Useful memo and secure memo apps.
- Size and weight. It’s comfortable.
- Descent built quality.
What I do not like about LG GW300:
- Built-in camera is a joke (but it’s understandable).
- You barely can customize anything.
- Base64 encoding in e-mail.
- You cannot view ToDo from a calendar. Neither can’t you setup reminders for ToDo items.
- The mediaplayer database rebuilds after any changes and it takes a lot of time. It’s easier to access your music through file system.
- Battery life is the same as of more feature rich smartphones.

I seem to be having a problem with download mini opera…
“insufficient memory error’
can you please help?

If you are having trouble getting to the Opera download page with the built-in browser, you may try to download Opera mini on your computer and than transfer to GW300 via USB-microUSB cable or bluetooth.
Also I wouldn’t recommend the latest – 5th – version of Opera mini – it haven’t been tested on LG GW300 yet. You better go for Opera mini 4.2

Sorry, can’t understand what exactly your problem is, but when it comes to J2ME apps there is an universal answer: “try another version of the troubled software”. It helps most of the time.

Hi! I’m planning to buy the phone for my high school sister. Just wondering, how long does battery life lasts? I mean for an average user and heavy user-i mean plays music for an hour lets say and like browsing twitter for more that an hour. Thank you so much! The phone really looks good!
April 27, 2010 at 14:55 |
You can expect from 36 to 48 hours.

Hi, i’m just looking for a phone in which will be comfortable to text, email, facebook, tweet on twitter and listen to music. Is this phone good for me? Will I be able to go on facebook and twitter anywhere? Or only at home?
I like the look of this one: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-6703.aspx
Is it for me?
Thanks

Yes, you will be able to use internet apps anywhere. Frankly, since it has no wi-fi there will be no difference if you are at home or on the street. But if you don’t like Java (J2ME) apps you should consider real smartphone like those with Android OS or iPhone. Check it in the store. If the preinstalled Facebook and Twitter apps are ok for you, go for it, you will love GW300 qwerty keyboard.

I am having trouble with Internet based Java applications like opera mini and Snaptu. My default browser is working fine. What could be the problem??

There are separate internet settings profile for Java apps. It should be set up correctly. Ask your carrier for correct settings.

i have had nothing but problems with this phone mainly the web browsing, sometimes i cant connect to the internet till a half hour later, all when im in mocospace a chat client it just randomly disconnects saying insufficient memory all the time,i cant even download opera mini any of them, such a headache any suggestions?

Buy any Android phone.
June 27, 2010 at 13:18 |
This phone is useless. internet is 2g not 3g. Often after powering up it fails to see my sim card, i have to reboot until it does. PC bluetooth software is hopeless, cant find the phone & when it does it cant connect. Battery does not last ANYWHERE near as long as quoted even with bluetooth switched off. Video recording on budget cameras is usually poor but with this phone its so bad you wonder why they even bothered. major problems with micro SD cards, either does not detect the card or displays a error when saving to it. JAVA support is crap, wont run virtually any apps including opera and gmail.

See my answer to the comment above – buy any Android phone.

I recently purchased three LG GW300 phones for the family. Two of these, brand new phones, now wont charge or operate.
For both : The battery went flat, the phone switching itself off. When the charger is plugged in – nothing! The phones will not charge up, or switch on. Any ideas, anyone?
Greetings from New Zealand.

Hi..anyone knows why my facebook app says : “unable to complete Login”..please help me..

UPDATE : Only 20 days after their purchase our brand new LG GW300s went back to the supplier – for refund, all users fed up with the frustration… frustration both with the phone itself, and the complete lack of helpful responsiveness, or solution, from LG. Using the only 4 letter word I am willing to publish… LG’s after sales support service is just a JOKE! The three main problems we experienced with the phones: (1) When an alarm sounds pressing “stop” does not immediately stop the alarm. Rather the alarm goes into snooze mode. The alarm finally stops after its 3rd or 4th activation, followed by pressing the “stop” button; (2) The phone randomly shuts down… usually when you are trying to send a text; (3) When the battery goes flat (becomes fully discharged) the phone completely dies – it will not charge nor operate… the latter, even with the charger plugged in. We can’t, and don’t, recommend LG. Try an alternative manufacturer.
